West Coast Flowers
At this time of the year, many local and overseas visitors start looking forward to the magnificent flower displays up the southern west coast of South Africa. Given the wet and wintery conditions prevailing in many areas of the country at the moment, this picture, sent in by Mike Lodge, from the West Coast National Park will hopefully brighten your day.
The photograph was taken on the 27 July on the side of the hill overlooking the Lagoon. The flowers are very early this year and the park is expecting a bumper crowd of sightseers through their gates. Postberg, the area on the peninsula where the flowers are at their most prolific, will also be open to the public from the 1 August at no extra charge, other than the seasonal entrance fees that are paid on arrival at the main gate. Your WildCard will also get you into this area during this period. The flower season runs until the end of September. Aside from the flowers, the Park is a spacious natural collection of marine lagoon, rolling hills, crashing surf, dolomite outcrops, estuarial islands and coastal dunes.
There is also a full restaurant at Geelbek on the southern end of the lagoon.
